Day #2904

December 13, 2021

December 13 is known as St. Lucia’s Day. I learned of this tradition while in seminary when a classmate, Lucy (of course), was chosen to “wear the lights.” A Google search reminds me that “this festival is celebrated in Sweden, Norway, and the Swedish-speaking areas of Finland.” “St. Lucia’s Day can be traced back to the 4th Century. It commemorates the martyr Lucia of Syracuse, who, as legend has it, brought food to Christians hiding in Roman catacombs, lighting her way with a candlelit wreath on her head.”

How does this celebration fit as a smile for the week? Well, just imagine you are hiding away, hungry, and see her coming. Surely that would bring a smile to your face. As does this Icon from the hand of Luke Dingman.

Blessings. And prayers.
