Day #2555

December 29, 2020

Tuesday’s Thoughts on Scripture comes from Ephesians 5:8: For once you were darkness, but now in the Lord you are light. Live as children of light. (NRSV)

This Sunday will be the Service of Lessons and Carols for Epiphany. Epiphany is a celebration of Light when, traditionally, it is commemorated that the Wisemen reach Jesus with their gifts long after his actual birth (following the Twelve Days of Christmas). This verse from Ephesians is certainly appropriate for this celebration. Jesus, the Light of the World, is with us. From the time of his birth, until now, and into the future, Jesus is with us. And through him, we are children of Light. Hope. Promise. Assurance. Peace.

As 2020 draws to a close, we need this reminder that we are light - not that we will be, not that we have been, but that we are. Of course, that does not mean we always “feel” like light, but because of Jesus we are. And we are free to live as light.

My prayer is that 2021 holds more days of being assured we are light and hope and promise, etc., than days of darkness or distress. Remember, the Light overcomes the darkness, and the darkness cannot and does not overcome it (see John 1:5)!

Oh, I also find it important to remember that every day the daylight hours get just a bit longer. Another reminder of being light. Thanks be to God.

Blessings. And prayers.
